Well, I was born in a city, I grew up in a city, I went to college in a city, I went to graduate school in a city. Other than the knowledge I was forced to absorb in biology classes, I have no idea how to farm. The only thing I have ever grown, or at least tried to grow, was cactus. And, oh yes, I killed all of them. I've had this belief that vegetables, fruits and herbs miraculously grow in grocery stores. It's impossible for me to produce one single tomato just as it's impossible for me to make a plastic cup.
Then why?
Reason #1: $2.99/pk fresh herbs, $0.98/each bell pepper, $4-5/four tomatoes, ...
Reason #2: we want a BLT, wait, the tomatoes we got from last shopping trip went bad???
Reason #3: let's make some salsa to go with the chips while watching american idol, um... we don't have any cilantro or jalapeno....
It began like this: One day (early-April), I had fresh basil on my shopping list. When I was hesitating if I should spend 3 bucks for those pieces of leaves or just use dried basil, I saw the "living herbs" from Shenandoah Growers for the same price. It immediately widened my eyes - now I can grow herbs in my kitchen and never need to feel the pain of buying herbs any more! (this plan has failed though...) There were only basil and a very sad looking mint left on the shelf, so I took them both.
About a week later, we went to Walmart, saw all those 20-cent seed packet. I would never have know they exist had it not been the feature products of that week, because I don't go to the garden section at all. Anyways, now I know how cheap the seed packets are, I bought a whole bunch of them. (and god knows what is wrong with me, that I even believed I can grow tomato!!!)
What edible plants do I have (or had)?
Basil, Mint, Thyme, Chive, Rosemary, Oregano, Parsley, Cilantro, Green Onion, Tomato, Cherry Tomato, Green Bean, Bell Pepper, Jalapeno, Cucumber, Lettuce, ... still expanding... haha, yes, we started biiiiiig! (so amateur, yet so greedy lol)
